Travels in Armenia – day 1 Yerevan

Travels in Armenia – day 1 Yerevan

I was on a small group tour of Armenia and Georgia with Explore. It was excellent with the best tour guide I have had and who became a very good friend

So here I am in Armenia. Arrived in the early hours of the morning. Checked into the hotel and given a room key. Opened the door and there was a man already in bed. Sure i didn’t order that on room service. Breakfast was interesting. There were the normal cereal, hams and cheeses and eggs. To acconpany it there were hot dogs, a type of pizza, fried chicken and noodles. Had a city tour tour and had so much information my brain feels like it’s going to explode. Information overload. She’s obviously very proud of her country and its achievements. First stop was a monastery which is unfortunately under construction. There is a huge focus on religion here and there is a great emphasis on Armenia founding the first Christian state. There are churches and monasteries everywhere. We had a very interesting visit to the ruins of a Christian temple.

At the monastery there was also a memorial to the Armenian Genocide.
We also attended part of a church service. I’m not in the slightest bit religious but there was a wonderful atmosphere, and the singing was beautiful. It was lovely and incredibly moving.

Modern sculpture Park and the cascade was incredible. A rich American Armenian started it as a project and displays his modern art collection here. In the park are some beautiful and interesting sculptures including some by one of my favourites Botero. The cascade consists of lots of steps leading to different levels and offering fantastic views. For those not wanting to climb the outside stairs there are escalators inside taking you up to each level. Inside are also more modern art displays and exhibitions. Unfortunately the top stage was never completed.

Lining each side of the park are lovely outdoor restaurant pumping out a spray of cooling mist, a pleasant relief from the 35 degree heat. Also welcome was a cold beer, a snack and a glass of one of the nicest white wines I have tasted. All this with a perfect backdrop.
On Sundays there is a huge craft market. There were some fantastic, individual and very creative items on sale. Armenia is famous for it’s silversmiths and there was some very beautiful silver jewellery on sale. I did get a little carried away but pieces were as little as £4 – 5 pounds and very individual. Tonight we ate at a local outdoor restaurant and were entertained by a singer with a very beautiful voice. Singing seems to be a big part of the culture here and there are professional choirs. Dinner didn’t look the most appetizing but tasted delicious. One of the main ingredients here is pomegranate. Everywhere today we saw fruit trees apricots, quince, peaches as well as figs and grapes. A good first day.
