Travels in Armenia part 4 – Lake Sevan

I was on a small group tour of Armenia and Georgia with Explore. It was excellent with the best tour guide I have had and who became a very good friend

So today we left Yerevan behind and are heading for Lake Sevan. Spectacular scenery en-route with a view of Mount Ararat and Turkey and of course the obligatory monastery.

All the villages here are named after things they are famous for. There’s fish village, apricot village and stork village.
The next stop was wine tasting. The classic wine surprisingly is fermented in metal vats – the premium in oak. I like Armenian wine a lot.

The scenary surrounding the canyon was so vibrant the rock formations a blaze of colour. It is one of the best lunch settings I have had.

The restaurant was next to a monastery. Another monastery, another great backdrop.

We climbed higher into the mountains, reaching an altitude of 2,400 metres. We saw a Caravan Serai, a resting place for travellers to shelter from bad weather and spend the night. Sometimes there would be up to 199 of them.

There was time for another monastery stop off – this one with a lake View!
Dinner was fish fresh from the lake and was delicious.
