A perfect day in Georgia

A perfect day in Georgia

I was on a small group tour of Armenia and Georgia with Explore. It was excellent with the best tour guide I have had and who became a very good friend.
Days don’t get any better than today and the scenary couldn’t be any prettier. It was a perfect day. We’re now up in Gudauri in the higher Caucuses. It’s a ski resort in the winter and there’s still snow on the highest peaks. In summer it is simply beautiful.
Today was a walk in the Kazbegi mountains. We stopped off en route at the Georgian/Russian friendship monument, a bit of a contradiction in terms. One side is Georgian, the other Russian.
Just taking it easy.

The next stop was the monument and gravestones for the German soldiers who helped build the road after the war. We were very close to the Russian border and there was a very long queue of trucks waiting to cross. They can be there for hours or days.
The hike in the a mountain was magnificent! We hiked to a church in the mountains. I opted to take the steep path and had the mountain to my self, it was magical . The church on the hill in the photo below was where we hiking to.

Dinner was at the house of a local family and was delicious, especially the stuffed aubergines.

In the village they still make felt using the traditional methods. In the mountains the villagers are given free gas in winter, higher pensions and some free university places for their children. This is to encourage people to stay in villages
It was also a perfect day for paragliding and I would have loved to have been up there.

It was a very special, memorable day. To round it off the hotel has a pool table and table tennis table and I had a mis-spent youth. The supermarket also has a huge range of extremely good and extremely good wines.
