Adventures in Georgia – Butami

  1. I was on a small group tour of Armenia and Georgia with Explore. It was excellent with the best tour guide I have had and who became a very good friend

Butami is located on the Black Sea coast, it is an important port and also summer holiday d
estination. Like most of Georgia it an eclectic mix of styles, architecture and cultures
. There is a lovely waterfront promenade with a huge Ferris wheel. Also standing there magnificently is the alphabet tower, a monument to Georgia’s unique language with it’s letter adorning the outside and a viewing deck affording excellent views.
What I’d most looked forward to seeing were the statues of Ali and Nino. The statues stand 7 feet tall. Created by a Georgian sculptor and inspired by a novel that tells the love story between Ali, a Muslim boy from Azerbaijan and Nino, a Christian Georgian girl. The statues start apart, back to back and then very slowly move towards each other, gradually getting closer so they are looking at other, then they appear to kiss and then embrace before merging into a single entity. It is mesmerising and extremely beautiful.

It is difficult to know where to look, there are so many beautiful buildings, lovely Piazzas and outdoor restaurants and cafes, frescoes and mosaics. I have a creek in my neck.

Where else would you find an art Deco police station?
Or a friendly local taking his hen for a ride on his bike?
Lunch was overlooking the sea and was one of the local specialities Khachapuri, a bread filled with cheese onto which an egg is cracked onto the top. Carb heaven, probably about 3,000 calories and boldly delicious, my kind of food. Of course you can’t have cheese without a nice glass of Georgian wine, a lovely lunch.
So Georgia is the Land of the Golden Fleece. The golden Fleece was said to have, been taken to what is now Georgia on the Black Sea where it was guarded by a fierce dragon. Jason’s uncle, King Periosluos had usurped the throne. Jason was smuggled out o f the kingdom as a baby for his safety. He vowed to regain the crown and soon made his way back to the kingdom. On his way he helped an old lady cross the stream by carrying her. This was the goddess Hera in disguise and she vowed to help and protect him. King Pelios was warned of his arrival. He set a series of trials for Jason and the impossible task of retrieving the Golden Fleece. If he achieved this he could claim throne. With the help of Hera and Athena he built his ship ‘the Argo’. He recruited the 50 best crew. There was one woman, Atlanta and the strongest man in the world Hercules.
They set sail for the Black Sea and what is now Georgia. They faced their trials, including defeating the warriors who stand up from sown dragon’s teeth. Fortunately, Medea, the daughter of King Aeetes fell in love with Jason and helped him steal the fleece from her father. She was known as a healer using plants and herbs. She made a option to put the dragon to sleep, enabling Jason to take the Golden Fleece. She is a famous figure in Georgia. She became Jason’s wife but went on to have, many adventures when discarded by Jason.
Just outside of the Butami are the biological gardens. Opened in 1912 by a Russian botanist it is a beautiful, relaxing setting. Unfortunately, for us this afternoon consisted of torrential downpours and thunderstorms, so it was hard to appreciate them to their fullest.
It is well worth a visit to Butami
The following day it was a visit to Prometheus grotto, an underground labyrinth of stalactites and stalagmites.
